Shop floor data capture ( SFDC ) is the entering of data by the user at the time that the data is being used rather than the recording of data onto pieces of paper and the subsequent entry of the data by either the user or a third party.

The main principle is that the data is recorded at source and shop floor data capture ( SFDC ) is usually implemented along with the barcoding of information ( bar code data capture ) to ensure that the information is accurate. The electronic data capture can be done either in batch mode or in real time.

A consequence of shop floor data Capture ( SFDC ) is that in general the capture of data is distinct from the updating of the information. This means that if the back end of the system is changed, for example the database and or computer, then only the programs used in updating the data need to be changed. This in turn means that the impact on the actual shop floor is either nil or negligible.

In batch mode the information is usually collected and stored in hand held terminals and transferred to the system when the terminal is placed into a dock.

Real time data capture can be achieved in a number of ways.

One method is where a bar code data capture device is attached to a Personal Computer (PC) and is used as a keyboard replacement. Using the barcode scanner ensures that the data entered is accurate; the drawback to this method is that the information has to be brought to the PC, which may or may not be feasible.

An extension to this method is the use of fixed terminals that have been specifically programmed for the task in hand.

Both of these methods provide the system developers the opportunity to provide an effective user interface that leads the user to data capture in a way that matches the shop floor operation, using terminology that is familiar to the user rather than in a way dictated by the package.

Another is the use of hand held terminals utilising a Radio Frequency network. This enables the user to collect information at their place of work rather than having to take the information to a fixed point. This is know as wireless data capture. Again the user can be led in the entering of the data. This method, however, provides the opportunity for a more proactive way in data capture. It allows for the interactive validation of data, thereby ensuring that data is even more accurate and relevant.

This type of systems is ideally suited to factory data capture, where manufacturing processes need to be strictly controlled.
